Macquarie House

Location

Belconnen, Canberra

Size

220 square metres

Status

Planning Approval

Sited on a suburban block, the house adopts a floorplan in an H-configuration to create semi-enclosed courtyards, creating landscape buffers to neighbouring houses.

As a result, each room has a unique outlook and engages with their respective landscape settings differently. The courtyard character begins in the entry. The volumes of the house enclose a courtyard of lush plants against a backdrop of natural materials. The house opens up to the landscape entirely at to the rear of the house where the main living areas have expansive views to the rear garden. The building takes advantage of solar passive design, which is critical for thermal comfort in Canberra's hot summers and cold winters. The strategic use of raked roof lines, eave overhangs, and glazing reduce the hot summer sun, while permitting winter sun in the colder months. A combination of truss and skillion rooves provide cost effective systems for construction, while reducing maintenance over the life of the building.

This main living areas of the house enjoy wide views to the rear yard and northerly solar aspect.
