A Heritage Extension in Darling Point

The brief demanded a complex program of new rooms, within a tight footprint constrained by planning requirements, a sloping site and heritage requirements.

The project demanded a sensitive approach that would accommodate the extension without detracting from the Heritage value of the original Gothic/Arts and Crafts era house. The extension entailed creating internal access from the garage car to the house, a new laundry room and new breakfast room to capitalise on views to the beach from the kitchen.

The design responds to the heritage values of the house, and challenging sloping site conditions through a series of cascading volumes. The result is a set of smaller buildings that allow the original house to retain prominence.

The new breakfast room draws inspiration from the Passalacqua Hotel in Lake Como, with its filligree steel work that sits delicately against the masonry brickwork of the main house.
